What are the long-term effects of a traumatic brain injury?

A traumatic brain injury can result from any number of different causes. While car accidents and work incidents are common reasons that individuals suffer trauma to their heads, other types of accidents can result in the puncture and impact injuries that lead to traumatic brain harm. After a head injury, it may take time for a victim to fully understand the extent of their medical difficulties and disability.

One disabling side effect that can change the course of a TBI victim's life is pain. Headaches can result after a person suffers a serious head injury, and those headaches may last for months after their incident. A person who suffers from severe pain after a TBI accident may not be able to return to work.

Additionally, vertigo, cognitive disturbances, and coordination can all be impacted in the long-term after a severe brain injury. When a person cannot focus, cannot form clear thoughts, and cannot physically be present to do a job, they may discover that their TBI keeps them from holding down the job they need. It is when these circumstances present themselves that individuals may begin to investigate their options for disability support. Programs exist through the Social Security Administration that may help them move their lives forward after suffering traumatic injuries to their brains.
